The Super Age 800
30 March 2026Endurance under load
Every other trial tests one system. The Super Age 800 tests them all at once. Your cardiovascular engine, your muscular endurance, your ability to maintain form when fatigue is telling you to quit. This is the final trial, and it’s designed to answer a simple question: when the weight is real and the distance is real, what do you have left?
THE SCIENCE
The Super Age 800 is a convergence trial. It loads your cardiovascular system (the largest CRF study ever conducted, covering 750,000 people, found that each 1-MET increase in fitness reduces mortality risk by 13-15%). It tests muscular endurance under an external load (the same mechanism behind grip strength’s relationship to longevity). And it measures your ability to sustain pace while carrying weight, which maps directly to what researchers call functional capacity: the ability to do the physical things that independent living requires. A UK Biobank study of over 50,000 adults found that walking pace alone, independent of total exercise volume, predicted mortality. The Super Age 800 asks: what’s your pace when the load is real?
The Trial
You’ll run (or walk) 800 meters carrying a sandbag at your chosen weight (10, 25, 40, or 50 lbs). Your finish time is adjusted by a weight multiplier. Heavier load, better adjusted score.
HOW TO TRAIN
Walk with weight. Then run with weight. Start simple: grab a pair of dumbbells, strap on a weighted vest, or load up a backpack and walk for distance. As you build capacity, pick up the pace. Add hills. Extend the duration. The progression is intuitive: carry more, go farther, move faster. And don’t skip your base cardio. The Super Age 800 will demand everything your VO2 max can give, so Zone 2 training and interval work aren’t separate from your 800 prep. They are your 800 prep.
